What we think the song "aint no rest for the wicked" is about and how we also might portray our angle on in

I think the song is about a guy having a crazy day and how he comes to realize what people have to do to survive. I think that he also realizes people have to do different things to survive as they are all different and they know how to exploit their skills such as the thug using his knowledge of guns, the con man using his knowledge to swindle money from the church and the prostitute using her feminine wilds. The main character realizes at the end that people only do what they do to survive and he almost forgives them for what they do.

Possible filming date

If we carry on making plans and keep to those plans i think that we should be able to do some filming in the summer holidays time around july/august as that is a good time for day light and for the hot weather.

Things to try do this weekend coming up

This weekend I think Matthew sharpe is going to take some pictures of the area were he lives as we mentioned earlyer on in the post about an alley that we might want to use aswell as the area around his house so some camera still would be good to get a better idea early on weheather to use that location or not.

Story board that we have come up with for "Aint no rest for the wicked"

Below is the story board that Matthew Sharpe and I created and sketched out.

Getting copyright permission

To do the song I wanted to do I had t get copy right permission and the way I did it was by going onto myspace.com.

Possible Actors

The actors that can get hold of are people in our class and possibly people from the theatre studies group. So far I have got Matthew Sharpe, Henry Reynolds, Andrew Moore and also I would help with the acting but we might need a few more people for the band shots so we might have to try see if people want to do it and make sure that they are reliable.

Different shot types and editing techniques that may be worth considering

I have looked at other music videos and I have come up with my own ideas on what I could use in our groups music video and what i thought would be good and a possible idea is to do what "Outcast" did for their music video "Hey ya" and make one person play more than one character.

What I also thought would be a good idea is if we use more than one people on screen at the same time and split the screen up like "black eyed peas" did with there song "dont phunk with my heart".

Another example of split screen is the song by "Example" and in their song "kickstarts" the split the screen up and do a shot right at the start that i was thinking about putting into the music video.

Another shot that we have to consider is bandshots and that involved shots that focus on the people playing the intriments shuch as in "Nirvana" "smell like teen spirit".

Another video that is interesting and uses good techniques is the song by "Skindred" and the song is "stand for something" and it uses animation and special effects that make it look like there is a crowd and it makes the tyrant character look powerful and a merciless leader.

In one of the "Flight of the concords" they use objects round them to make noise and use them as instriments and we could use this idea in our video.

Available locations, mise en scene, time available etc

Going with some ideas i have thought about so far i think it is possible to get hold of what we need as a group. I also have looked at possible costumes that we could use and we can get hold off from amazon.com and the ones I have found are below.

Initial ideas

I have had an idea about doing a song I like and I have mentioned it to my group member Matthew Sharpe, the song is "There Aint No Rest For The Wicked" by "Cage The Elephant".

We have not done a full story board yet but we have looked closely at the lyrics and thought about what we could have in the shot in different parts of the song.

Lyrics

Camera Shot

I was walking down the street,

Close up Feet shot

to mid range shot of guy walking

When out the corner of my eye

Extreme close up of guys eye

I saw a pretty little thing approaching me.
She said "I've never seen a man
Who looks so all alone,
Could you use a little company?

If you can pay the right price
Your evening will be nice,
And you can go and send me on my way."

Mid shot of Other character

.

Over the shoulder shot to get reaction shot

.

Back to mid shot

.

.

I said "You're such a sweet young thing
Why you do this to yourself?"

She looked at me and this is what she said:

Mid shot of guy

Then when it gets half way through to the point when it says “She looked at me…” then it goes to the transvestite

"Oh, there ain't no rest for the wicked,
Money don't grow on trees.
I got bills to pay,
I got mouths to feed,
There ain't nothing in this world for free.

I know I can't slow down,
I can't hold back,
Though you know, I wish I could.
No there ain't no rest for the wicked,
Until we close our eyes for good".

Mid shot of transvestite

Close up of tree with money taped to it

Close up of guy picking up post

Close up of hands talking

Globe of world spinning

.

.

Mid shot of guy then joggers run past

Not even fifteen minutes later
I'm still walking down the street,

Close up of watch

Mid shot of guy

When I saw a shadow of a man creep out of sight.

Angle shot of shadow

And then he sweeps up from behind
And puts a gun up to my head,

Close up of head with space to the left and gun enters from the right up against guys head

He made it clear he wasn't looking for a fight.

Close up of guys head

He said "Give me all you've got
I want your money not your life,
But if you try to make a move I won't think twice."

.

Mid shot of guy holding gun as he spins the guy around

.

I go like "You can have my cash
But first you know I got to ask
What made you want to live this kind of life?"

Mid range shot of guy

.

.

He said "There ain't no rest for the wicked,
Money don't grow on trees.
I got bills to pay,
I got mouths to feed,
There ain't nothing in this world for free.

I know I can't slow down,
I can't hold back,
Though you know, I wish I could.
No there ain't no rest for the wicked,
Until we close our eyes for good".

Mid shot of mugger

Close up of tree with money taped to it

Close up of guy picking up post

Close up of hands talking

Globe of world spinning

.

.

Mid shot of guy

.

.

Now a couple hours have passed
And I was sitting at my house,
The day was winding down and coming to an end.
So I turned on the TV
And flipped it over to the news,
And what I saw I almost couldn't comprehend.

Close up of watch

Over the shoulder shot in house

Mid shot of guy sitting down facing camera

Guy picks up remote , turns TV on

Mid shot of TV ( reporter on tv)

Guy looking shocked or guy talking

I saw a preacher man in cuffs he'd taken money from the church,
He stuffed his bank account with righteous dollar bills.

Back to tv, on tv there is a man in a suite and a preacher

Then it goes full screen as if we were there and there is a two shot the two people talking outside church then a close up of suites face then a close up of the preachers face

(preacher looking warry) ( suite having a cunning look on his face)

But even still I can't say much

Because I know we're all the same,
oh yes we all seek out to satisfy those thrills

"Oh, there ain't no rest for the wicked,
Money don't grow on trees.
We got bills to pay,
We got mouths to feed,
There ain't nothing in this world for free.
I know we can't slow down,
We can't hold back,
Though you know, we wish we could.
No there ain't no rest for the wicked,
Until we close our eyes for good"

Back to mid shot on sofa

.

.

Multi shot as screen splits up into 5 or 6 depending if we use the preacher if we want to in this shot

.

.

.

.

.

.

.

Fade to black

Initial brief

In the AS brief we had to create a film opening as a group and we went for a specific target audience, going for the British Board of Film Classification (BBFC) 15.

In the A2 brief we were asked to create a music video for a specific audience and it has to come with a Digipak cover for the song we have chosen and a magazine advertisement for it. We had to have the maximum of four in a group but as a a class we split up into smaller groups as there were not that many of us. This new brief that we have been set enables us to do more exciting stuff as it allows more creativity than the AS brief. But with more creativity I think now it also brings a harder task as we now have three things to produce instead of one as before. By being able to work in a number of different media I will be able to expand my abilities to be creative in these media as the course progresses.
